After many years of practicing obstetrics and gynecology in Dallas, Texas, I developed a eye condition that extremely limited my ability to perform surgery. I ultimately had to retire from my practice and take medical disability. I started to search for some other career since I was too young to completely retire. One of my patient’s husbands worked with a major financial services company in Dallas that also had disability insurance as part of their portfolio. He and I were talking about what I was going to do with my time at a dinner party one evening. He said that since you are a physician and you are on disability, why don’t you work with our company and make sure physicians have great disability coverage in case something happens to them as it did to you.
